THE DARK COLONIAL PAST HISTORY

NEXT

Our Historical Tours focus on the colonial past, Ashanti Empire and Ghana’s Independence, with a strong focus on the architectural monuments, forts, castles and colonial buildings during our journey of discovery.

If you are interested in history then Ghana has an important significance when it comes to West Africa. Ghana has a vibrant cultural identity and has been inhabited for over 300000 years. Its current ethnographic composition is the result of constant migration from the North and Eastern parts of Africa, mainly due to the abundance of gold in the region. There are still remains of an incredible 20 fortifications and castles dotting the coastline of Ghana, many still in excellent condition for an emotional exploration of the dark and harrowing colonial period in our history. Allow our expert team to design bespoke tours around the specific areas of history you are interested in, nothing is beyond us.

Our small group all-inclusive scheduled Ghana Historical tours operate year-round; alternatively we can design bespoke tours for individuals, couples, families, small or large groups, just contact us

THE COASTAL COLONIAL PAST

The Elmina Castle of St George is the oldest extant colonial building in sub-Saharan Africa, dating back to 1482 when it was initially built by Portuguese traders.

Later converted to detain enslaved Africans, it is one of 20 forts and castles still remaining along Ghana’s 550km coastline. Almost 70% of all colonial forts and castles built along the entire West African coastline, from Cameroon to Senegal, were built in Ghana. Our Coastal Colonial Past Tours have a strong focus on visiting as many of these as your timeframe will allow, learning about the history of the Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish, Danes and British who colonised parts of Ghana in history. These tours also focus on other history, including the Ashanti Kingdom and can be tailored to your exact areas of interest.

LEGACIES OF THE ASHANTI KINGDOM

Historically one of the most feared tribes in West Africa, the powerful Ashanti Kingdom has a fascinating history waiting to be discovered.

We join paramount, divisional and sub chiefs in paying homage to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, King of the Asanteman Kingdom, during the spectacular Akwasidee festival. We witness traditional drumming and dance, learn the methods and history behind traditional Kente-weaving, brass-casting, wood-carving and bead-making, whilst spending time with the locals in ancient villages in all these regions during our expedition. Mahinya Palace and the National Centre for Culture are must-visits, as is the Prempeh Jubilee Museum as we delve deep into the legacies of this powerful people. In addition to our journey through Ashanti history, we also dedicate quality time to visiting UNESCO World Heritage sites at Elmina and Cape Coast castles and learning about the dark colonial past during our time in the coastal region of Ghana. Our tours can be adapted to incorporate other areas of interest such as beach relaxation, wildlife viewing and more.
