OUR PROJECTS

Ashanti African Tours completed projects to date

We are pleased to announce that in July 2014 we completed the construction of and handed over to the local community an 8 classroom school facility at Brenu Akyinim near Elmina in the Cape Coast district of the central region of Ghana.

During the majority of our tours we visit Brenu Akyinim an area of coastal grassland savannah to enjoy one of Ghana’s finest beaches in addition to seeing the excellent birds and nature that occur in this habitat.  The population of this local community numbers approximately 3000 and there was an urgent need for a crèche, nursery and primary school due to the previous one being destroyed in a storm where the old building totally collapsed in late 2013.  Children of this age group were no longer attending school and remained in the house or were working on family farms or local fishing boats as the government would not commit to the construction of a new school facility.

After several discussions with local chiefs and community leaders it was established that Ashanti African Tours would construct an 8 classroom school facility as part of our social responsibility and commitment to connect ethical tourism in locations we visit to community development and habitat conservation. The project was completed in July 2014 at a total cost of over $30,000.00 USD to our company.  The school construction and renovations are over 3 buildings and offers free education opportunities to over 200 students from this coastal community.

The next phase of our project is to offer training and support to the many youth of the community that did not have the opportunity to attend school when growing up.  There is a major problem where young girls do not attend school, fall pregnant and get into relationships with older men who they then rely on for money to live.  Our aim is to offer free training in the following areas.

  • Tailoring
  • Hairdressing
  • Catering
  • Carpentry
  • Construction
  • Auto mechanics

We hope to be able to educate the youth to become self-sufficient and alleviate the need for them to rely on others for money to survive.  We will also offer free lessons to adults in reading and writing.

THE NEXT PHASE OF OUR COMMITMENT TO ETHICAL TRAVEL

ASHANTI AFRICAN TOURS CURRENT PROJECTS

Our PECK Project

Our Picathartes Education and Conservation for Knowledge Fund aims to support the 3 communities which surround a small upper guinea rainforest that protects endangered bird and mammal species that included Long-tailed Pangolin and at least 24 nesting sites for an endnagered bird species the Yellow-headed Picathartes.

Ultimately we hope that by showing our commitment to the communities through ethical travel and eco-tourism enabling them to see the immediate benefits of conserving the habitat they will help us stop the illegal logging and hunting activities by locals that come from or pass through their communities.

Main objectives of our PECK project

  • Construction of an 11 classroom school facility for creche, KG and Primary level students
  • Construction of student toilets
  • Construction of teacher accommodation
  • Construction of tourist visitor centre with souvinier shop, refreshments, registration and payment desk in addition to toilet facilities for tourists.
  • Construction of an eco lodge for tourists building 10 twin bedded en-suite chalets, restaurant, kitchen and store room
  • Extension of power to the community of Bonkro
  • Reforestation of land from the Bonkro community to current forest habitat
  • Sponsorship of girls and boys local football teams

All proceeds generated from the tourist center, forest entrance fees, birding fees, renting of accommodation, food and refreshments in addition to sales generated at the souvenir shop will go directly into a community fund which we have set up for the local communities.

Current progress of project

Construction on the school building started in late 2013 and we had hoped it would have been completed by January 2017. Unfortunately the Ebola outbreak in West Africa had a devastating effect on our business with over 90% of travelers cancelling their holidays with our company, this lasted for almost 18 months and meant we had to pause our project due to the lack of funds available to invest. With the negativity regarding travel to West Africa now subsiding we have now continued with the construction of the school and reception center. The school has passed lintel level and it is now only the roofing, fixtures and fittings that need completing. The reception center has been roofed and it is now remaining the fixtures and fittings to complete this construction. All other project objectives are yet to be realized and are ongoing.
