Birding in West Africa: the best places and species to look for

Ghana Blue headed Bee eater

West Africa is one of the world’s most underrated birding regions, offering an extraordinary mix of species across a remarkable range of habitats.

From coastal wetlands and lowland rainforests to woodland savannahs and volcanic islands, the region delivers high species diversity, rare endemics and unforgettable experiences for birders of all levels.

At Ashanti African Tours, our Birding and Nature Tours are designed to showcase the very best birding locations in the region. Our carefully crafted itineraries explore the heart of the Upper Guinea biodiversity hotspot in Ghana, alongside the endemic-rich volcanic islands of São Tomé and Príncipe.

Why West Africa Is So Important for Birding

The Upper Guinea forests once stretched continuously from Guinea through Sierra Leone, Liberia, Côte d’Ivoire and into Ghana. Today, the remaining forest blocks protect a unique concentration of endemic and near-endemic species, many of which are difficult or impossible to see elsewhere.

What makes West Africa particularly special for birders is the variety of habitats accessible within relatively short distances. Coastal lagoons attract waders and waterbirds, mangroves host specialist species, dense rainforests shelter secretive endemics, while woodland and savannah zones support raptors, bustards and Sahelian species. Combined with warm hospitality and improving conservation efforts, West Africa offers birding adventures that are both rich and meaningful.

Birding in Ghana

Located in the heart of the region, Ghana is widely regarded as the top birding destination in West Africa. Few countries offer such comprehensive habitat coverage, excellent infrastructure and consistently rewarding birding within a single itinerary.

Coastal Wetlands & Lagoons
Along Ghana’s coast, lagoons and estuaries provide excellent birding for waders, terns and herons. These areas are particularly productive during migration periods, offering strong species variety early in any itinerary.

Upper Guinea Rainforests (Kakum & Beyond)
Moving inland, Ghana’s rainforests protect many of the region’s most sought-after species. Kakum National Park and surrounding forest reserves are famous for hornbills, turacos, greenbuls and dazzling sunbirds. These forests are also home to Ghana’s most iconic bird…

White-necked Rockfowl (Yellow-headed Picathartes)
One of Africa’s most remarkable species, the White-necked Rockfowl is a must-see for serious birders. Ghana remains one of the most reliable places in the world to observe this species and traveling with our expert local guides, we maintain a 100% success rate.

Northern Savannah & Woodland (Mole National Park)
As the landscape transitions north, broadleaved Guinea woodland gives way to savannah. Mole National Park is a standout site for birding, with species such as Pel’s Fishing Owl, Abyssinian Roller, various raptors and Sahel-influenced species. The park’s open landscapes are also home to African elephants, buffalo, kob, waterbuck, warthog, baboons, and other savannah mammals, adding another rich dimension to the birding experience.

Egyptian Plover
Another highlight is the Egyptian Plover, a species so distinctive it has recently been placed in a family of its own. Ghana is one of the best countries in Africa to see this extraordinary bird.

São Tomé and Príncipe

Cao Grande Mountain Sao Tome

Known as the “African Galápagos,” these two islands off the coast of West Africa are celebrated for their stunning scenery and incredible diversity of endemic bird species.

With Ashanti African Tours, travellers can embark on a guided journey through this pristine oasis in the Gulf of Guinea, exploring the breathtaking rainforests and volcanic landscapes that make São Tomé and Príncipe so extraordinary.

Depending on which taxonomic data you follow, São Tomé and Príncipe boast an incredible 29 endemic bird species, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. Guided by Ashanti African Tours’ knowledgeable team, you’ll have the chance to spot these unique birds up close, traversing volcanic slopes, dense rainforests and lush valleys in search of some of Africa’s most elusive avian treasures.

More Than Bird Lists

While birds are the primary focus, our tours offer far more than ticking species off a list. Birding days are enriched by encounters with rare mammals, colourful butterflies and immersive cultural experiences. Forest walks, river cruises, and village visits provide context and depth, creating journeys that feel complete and deeply rewarding.

Led by West Africa’s most experienced local bird guides, our tours combine professional field expertise with responsible, community-led travel. We work closely with conservation initiatives and local communities to ensure tourism supports the protection of habitats and livelihoods.

If West Africa is on your birding radar, Ghana is the place to start, and Ashanti African Tours is the team to take you there.
