Five reasons to visit West Africa

West Africa is a region full of adventure, rich culture and untold stories, yet it is a destination that’s often overlooked compared to other parts of the continent. While East and Southern Africa are well-known for the big draw-cards: the Serengeti, the Maasai Mara, the crater, the Delta and ‘Big five’ safaris, West Africa offers an entirely different kind of travel experience.

If you’re looking for wildlife, history or immersive cultural experiences, this diverse region offers it. So for anyone planning their next big adventure, here are five reasons why West Africa should be at the top of your list.

Sunshine and smiles!

One of the first things you’ll notice when visiting West Africa is the warmth of its people. In Ghana, for example, locals are known for their friendliness and deep respect of visitors. From big cities to small villages, Ghanaians greet you with smiles, kindness and open hearts.

Whether you’re exploring bustling markets, relaxing on sunny beaches or joining a community celebration, the hospitality you’ll receive makes you feel right at home.

Beyond the warm welcomes, the region’s climate is another draw. With year-round sunshine and mild coastal breezes, destinations like Ghana, Sierra Leone and Senegal offer ideal conditions for beach getaways, cultural explorations and outdoor adventures.

No overtourism here!

Unlike Africa’s more frequented tourist destinations, West Africa offers a refreshing escape from the crowds. Here, you can explore untouched landscapes, immerse yourself in centuries-old traditions and interact with welcoming communities off the beaten track.

In Ghana, venture beyond the bustling capital of Accra to discover remote beaches, picturesque fishing villages and lush forests teeming with wildlife. For a truly unique experience, visit the Nzulezo Stilt Village, a UNESCO-listed settlement built entirely on water, providing a fascinating glimpse into a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries.
Places like Sierra Leone’s Tiwai Island or Guinea’s highland plateaus offer unparalleled natural beauty and unique cultural experiences far from the crowds.

We operate tours through Ghana, Togo, Benin, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Gambia, Senegal, São Tomé and Príncipe, and offer a multitude of options to explore these hidden gems of Africa away from the crowds.

The Ashanti Kingdom

West Africa is home to some of the world’s most fascinating cultures, from the powerful Ashanti and Mali empires to the intricate traditions of the Fula, Ewe and Yoruba peoples. The region’s cultural diversity is reflected in its festivals, music, art and historical landmarks.

Fetu Afahye

In Ghana, the legacy of the Ashanti Kingdom, one of Africa’s most influential empires, continues to thrive. Deeply rooted in spiritual traditions and ancestral reverence, the Ashanti people have preserved their heritage through shrines, monuments and royal customs. One of the most revered sites is the Okomfo Anokye Sword Site in Kumasi. This legendary sword, planted in the ground centuries ago by the Ashanti priest Komfo Anokye, is believed to be immovable—a powerful symbol of Ashanti strength and unity.

Kumasi, the former capital of the Ashanti Kingdom, is also a hub of culture and commerce where history comes alive. Visitors can lose themselves in the energy of Kejetia Market, the largest market in West Africa, where artisans sell everything from handcrafted beads to traditional textiles to giant live snails! To dive even deeper into Ghanaian heritage, a visit to a Kente weaving village will reveal the artistry behind one of Ghana’s most iconic cultural symbols.

Wildlife & birdlife

Packed with prime opportunities to encounter incredible biodiversity, West Africa offers pristine habitats, ranging from dense rainforests and savannahs to mangroves and coastal wetlands. While the region isn’t known for traditional safaris, it offers incredible wildlife experiences.

White-necked Picathartes

Ghana alone boasts 16 national parks and protected reserves, home to a treasure trove of incredible wildlife. From the endangered olive colobus monkeys and pangolins in lush forests to elephants and hippos in Northern Ghana. Birdwatchers and butterfly lovers will be especially delighted, as Ghana is home to nearly 1,000 butterfly species and over 750 bird species, including the rare yellow-headed picathartes.

Whether you’re chasing specific species or simply love wildlife, our expert travel planners craft tailored trips that immerse you in untouched wilderness and remote beauty. And a bonus too. Every booking supports wildlife conservation and habitat protection.

Positive Impact Community Tourism

Traveling to West Africa is not just about seeing beautiful places—it’s also an opportunity to make a positive impact. Many of our local tourism initiatives focus on community engagement, ensuring that visitors contribute to sustainable development while experiencing authentic cultural exchanges.

Here at Ashanti African Tours, we put local communities and the environment at the heart of what we do.
