Thinking of going to Ghana? There are always a multitude of questions people have before deciding on a holiday, and whether it’s your first time visiting or you’re a seasoned West Africa traveller, a little preparation goes a long way.

Climate and what to pack
One of the great things about Ghana is that it’s warm enough to visit at any time of year. Due to its tropical weather, we’d recommend packing light and breathable clothing. Cotton and linen fabrics are your best friends here.
And don’t forget sunscreen, a hat and comfortable walking shoes. If you’re visiting during the green season (May to October), a lightweight rain jacket is a smart addition.
Language
English is Ghana’s official language, making communication easy for most international visitors. That said, you’ll hear plenty of local languages like Twi, Ga and Ewe throughout the country. Learning a few basic phrases in Twi like “Akwaaba” (welcome) or “Medaase” (thank you) goes a long way and is always met with warm smiles.
If English is not your first language, don’t worry! We have expert multilingual guides available to cater to most languages, ensuring smooth communication and a richer travel experience during your tour.
Currency and payments
The local currency is the Ghanaian Cedi (GHS). While credit and debit cards are accepted in major cities like Accra and Kumasi, cash is king, especially in rural areas and local markets. ATMs are widely available in urban centres, but we would always recommend carrying some cash with you when travelling outside the cities.
Food & drink
Ghanaian cuisine is bold, flavorful and very delicious. You’ll find staples like jollof rice, fufu (pounded cassava or plantain), grilled tilapia, red red (black-eyed pea stew) and kelewele (spicy fried plantains) everywhere you go. Street food is part of the experience and generally safe, but stick to freshly cooked items and bottled or filtered water to be on the safe side.
For travellers with dietary restrictions (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or allergies) most restaurants and lodges are accommodating and our team can help plan meals ahead. Local dishes often include naturally gluten-free or vegetarian options!

Tipping etiquette
Tipping isn’t mandatory in Ghana, but it’s always appreciated for excellent service. At Ashanti African Tours, we have a company policy to tip all local site guides and hotel staff as part of our commitment to supporting local communities. If you’d like to tip our guides, drivers, or hotel staff directly, it’s entirely at your discretion and always warmly received.
Getting around
Transportation in Ghana is varied and accessible. If you want to do it like a local, Tro-tros (shared minibuses) are the most common and affordable way to get around, though they can be crowded. For more comfort and convenience, taxis and ride-hailing apps like Uber and Bolt operate in major cities. If you’re travelling with Ashanti African Tours, all your transportation is arranged and handled by our expert team!
Safety
Ghana is widely regarded as one of the safest countries in West Africa. The people are friendly and the atmosphere is welcoming. As with anywhere, it’s wise to stay aware of your surroundings and always listen to the advice of your guides. When you travel with us, you’re in safe, experienced hands every step of the way.
Visas and travel insurance
Most international travellers will need a visa to enter Ghana. Requirements vary by nationality, so check well in advance and apply early. Visas can often be obtained online or on arrival, but confirming beforehand saves stress. If you get stuck or need a hand, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team.
We also highly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations and lost luggage. It’s a small investment for significant peace of mind.
Top things to do in Ghana
With lush rainforests, abundant wildlife and centuries-old cultural traditions to historic coastal forts and vibrant artisanal crafts, Ghana is an absolute treasure trove of experiences for any traveller.
Imagine hiking to the country’s tallest waterfall in the morning, witnessing a colourful naming ceremony in the afternoon, and ending your day canoeing through a stilt village or spotting monkeys swinging through the forest canopy.
