Ghana has officially launched its new e-Visa portal, a major update designed to make the visa application process faster, more digital and easier for international travellers. The new platform allows applicants to apply online, upload supporting documents, make payments digitally and receive travel authorisation electronically, without needing to visit a Ghanaian embassy or consulate in person.
One of the most important changes for African travellers is that African passport holders applying through the new online system will not pay visa fees. Public reporting around the launch describes the waiver as applying to African travellers coming for business or tourism, while the Ministry of the Interior’s launch post specifically refers to business travel.
The launch also signals a wider shift in Ghana’s border and travel systems. The Ministry of the Interior says the new e-Visa platform is intended to improve service delivery, strengthen border security, and support trade and tourism through a more modern immigration process. Ghana’s government has also said the previous visa-on-arrival system is being discontinued and replaced by this new digital visa regime.
There is also good news for passengers travelling through Accra. At the same launch, President Mahama announced that new 3D scanners are being installed at Terminals 2 and 3, which will remove the need for travellers to take laptops and liquids out of their hand luggage during screening. He also said that from August, additional equipment will be installed so passengers will no longer need to remove shoes and belts during security checks.
For travellers planning a trip to Ghana, the main takeaway is clear: the entry process is moving towards a more convenient digital system, while the airport experience is also being upgraded. As more operational details emerge, this should make Ghana an even easier destination to visit for business, heritage travel and wider West Africa itineraries.
