More people of African descent decided to take the journey to experience their African heritage and we are passionate to work with you to continue this emotional reconnection, “Beyond the Return”.
Our homecoming vacations welcome you back home to the motherland, celebrating culture past and present focusing on the positive news from this exceptional region of Africa. An educative and enjoyable African Heritage experience showcasing your rich and colorful cultural identity that still lives on and plays a vital role in everyday life for your people.
A traditional naming ceremony will be arranged in your honor where you finally receive your true African name that you would have received from your ancestors. The name given to you is correct as it is connected to the day of the week you were born on so you can be confident in its authenticity. Retracing the steps your forefathers were forced to make, gaining in-depth knowledge of what happened and seeing firsthand the edifices and now silent monuments that remain to this day is an important part of your journey.

These traditional Asante buildings host 10 active shrines made from bamboo, timber, mud, and thatch. The walls are adorned with motifs that bear ancient Adinkra symbols, which hold significant cultural meanings. The site is connected to Nana Yaa Asantewaa, a prominent female warrior and leader of the Ashanti during the 1901 war against the British. The journey through Ashanti history continues with visits to Adanwomasie and Ntonso. Adanwomasie is the birthplace of Ghana’s vibrant Kente cloth. Next, you’ll visit the National Cultural Centre near Bantama, Kumasi. This area hosts a craft market and the Prempeh II Jubilee museum, which showcases Ashanti history and ancient artifacts. Leaving Kumasi, you’ll head south to Elmina in the central region of Ghana. Elmina was named by the Portuguese due to the abundance of gold in the area, reflecting Ghana’s historical significance in the gold trade.
A poignant stop at Assin Manso follows, a town along the enslaved African trade route. This location marked a significant point on the journey for enslaved Africans, where they were checked and bathed before being transported to Cape Coast for shipment to the Americas. The journey was grueling, often leaving them in poor health.
In the early evening, you’ll visit Cape Coast Castle, a powerful and emotional monument to the painful history of the transatlantic slave trade. This castle held more enslaved Africans than any other in West Africa. Quality time will be spent exploring this historical site, including the dungeons where captives were held before being taken through the infamous “Door of no Return.”
You’ll have the opportunity to pay respects at a shrine in the end dungeon, and an educational museum explains the castle’s history. Many people from the diaspora have returned to Ghana and settled in Cape Coast and Elmina, setting up businesses and homes. After settling into your hotel, you can choose to dine at one of the restaurants owned by those who’ve returned, hearing their experiences and insights. Alternatively, you can relax at the hotel, reflecting on the day’s experiences.

Day 8 - Kakum National Park and Traditional Naming Ceremony
Get ready for an action-packed day starting with an early sunrise breakfast on Ghana’s finest beachfront. Your adventure continues at Kakum National Park, a semi-deciduous upper guinea rainforest famous for its canopy walkway. The canopy walkway, suspended 40 meters above the rainforest floor, offers stunning views and consists of seven bridges attached to emerging trees. The experience is breathtaking and unforgettable.
Back at the park headquarters, an informative center provides insight into the park’s flora and fauna, including over 40 mammal species like forest elephants and leopards. After lunch, an extraordinary moment awaits with your official Naming Ceremony. Visiting a local village, you’ll be welcomed by chiefs and community elders, marking your return to the land of your ancestors. Traditional drumming and dancing immerse you in the Ghanaian village life. During your personal naming ceremony, you’ll be given a true African name by chiefs and elders, following ancestral traditions. This name would have been yours if you were born in Ghana, carrying emotional significance. After celebrations, you’ll return to your hotel to relax.
In the evening, you have the option to celebrate by heading to Cape Coast town for live music, food, dancing, and reflection. Alternatively, you can choose to unwind at your hotel. This remarkable day promises memorable experiences and a deep connection to Ghana’s culture and heritage.
Accommodation – Golden Hill Parker Hotel in Elmina
Day 9 - Relaxation, Cooking Lesson, School Visit, Traditional Drumming and Dance, and Beach Relaxation
The morning offers relaxation at the hotel’s facilities, where you can swim, enjoy the pool, and soak in the picturesque views of Elmina town. The culinary journey begins as you meet cook Sister Akua in Cape Coast. Each participant has their own table and ingredients to create a Ghanaian dish for lunch. It’s a fun activity with options like red red, ampesie, fufu, groundnut soup, banku, and the famous jollof rice. The best part is savoring your creations. You’ll receive a local cookbook to continue cooking African dishes.
After lunch, you’ll head to Brenu Akyinim, one of Ghana’s best beaches, showcasing the positive impact of your travels on local communities. Before enjoying the beach, you’ll visit the Brenu Akyinim primary school, built with tour profits to provide education after the previous school was destroyed. The afternoon is dedicated to beach relaxation, with dinner featuring delicious seafood against the backdrop of the West African Gold Coast. A beach bonfire enhances the ambiance, complemented by local drumming and dancing. You can even partake in traditional drumming lessons and dances before returning to the hotel to unwind.
Accommodation – Golden Hill Parker Hotel in Elmina
Day 10 - Elmina Castle, and Accra for Departure
After a relaxing breakfast, your guide and driver will collect your bags and prepare to head back to Accra. En route, you’ll pass through Elmina, a fishing town with a rich history. In Elmina, you’ll visit the Castle of St. George, the oldest colonial building in sub-Saharan Africa, dating back to 1482. This castle has historical significance, particularly during the tragic era of the transatlantic slave trade. The castle now stands as a silent monument to that painful history and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. After the tour, you can explore the local fishing market and visit the traditional boat builders, witnessing a community that has changed little since the days of the slave trade.
Continuing your journey, you’ll return to Accra, the capital. Before your departure, there’s an early evening meal arranged, providing an opportunity for goodbyes and reflections on the wonderful experiences shared. As you leave, you become a part of the Ashanti African Tours family, and though missed, your time in Ghana will leave a lasting impact.

The Trip that affirmed me
My two friends and I went on the 8-day Ghana Heritage Tour conducted by Ashanti African Tours. The experience began when we connected with the Administrative team. They were extremely professional, knowledgeable, and responsive. Rosematilda, our contact person was highly organized, extremely informative, promptly responsive, and exhibited consummate professionalism at all times.
Our guide, Foster Frimpong was exceptional. It was apparent in everything he did that he held himself to the highest level of professionalism. He was a wealth of information and like every good teacher he shared the information with us while riding the tour bus preparing us for what we would be encountering at the next stop; this allowed me to better understand and absorb the information we received at each of the site visits. He extended himself to the point that we felt we were traveling with a very knowledgeable family member. He was on top of all our requests and needs such as bathroom breaks, distributing water, providing music, and ensuring that the temperature in the bus was always comfortable. He truly could be an exceptional trainer for other tour guides.
Our driver, Ibrahim was the epitome of professionalism. He was knowledgeable, an exceptional chauffeur, and made us feel as if we were traveling with a very competent family member. He made it a point to help us take pictures, especially group pictures. He pointed out things of interest as we were on the road.
As far as accommodations, they were each exemplary hotels with exemplary staff. Great choices!! As for our meals, I am from Panama, Central America. It made my heart so happy to find so many foods that we eat that we brought from our Ghanaian roots. Every meal was nutritious, delicious, and a glimpse into true Ghanaian food.
I have returned home and encouraged all my friends and family members to reach out to you to schedule this same trip. This trip exceeded all my expectations. I was educated. I was enlightened as to who I am and where I came from. I was affirmed that I, a black person am of worth(my ancestors were of worth). I cannot put into words or thank you enough for a trip filled with learning, pain, joy, and exaltation. You exceeded all my expectations.
Since I have returned home I have made it my duty to tell all my friends and family, especially my children about my trip and the fact that they must make this trip and the only tour group that they should consider is Ashanti African Tours. You have set a very high bar of excellence for any future trips I take.
★★★★★Fantastic Tour
What a wonderful experience!
Ashanti Tours guided our (very large) group with patience, grace, humor, and kindness.
The tour was well balanced between heritage sites, educational stops, and deep cultural dives. Our tour guides were exceedingly knowledgeable and patient with us, and fantastic guides in such an intense, beautiful, and emotionally challenging experience.
Highly recommended to let them guide you through Ghana.
★★★★★My expectations were exceeded!
Initially, I made this journey to physically connect with my West African roots. However, due to the outstanding knowledge and passion of our phenomenal tour guide Isaac and our world class driver Christian, I was also immersed spiritually and philosophically into my West African heritage. I do not have the words to adequately explain how I feel other than to say … “this was a trip I will cherish forever!”
Thank you, Ashanti African Tours!
