Butterfly Tours

Begin your journey in Ghana with a warm welcome and an immersive cultural introduction.

• Arrival at Kotoka International Airport in Accra.
• Greeted by guide and driver from Ashanti African Tours.
• After boarding the vehicle, you will be transferred to your accommodation near Atewa Forest Range.
• Akwaaba welcome dinner with delicious African cuisine.
• Enjoy evening meal at the hotel restaurant whilst acclimatising yourself to West Africa.

Accommodation – In New Tafo

• Your first morning in Ghana we head for arguably Ghana’s premier location for rare endemic butterfly species Atewa Range.
• During the day, lunch is provided, and the evenings are spent at a nearby guesthouse, where visitors can relax and add to their butterfly lists.

• On day 4, we set off from Atewa to visit the Bobiri Butterfly Sanctuary, a 5000 hectare fragment of the once-dry semi-deciduous rainforest in Ghana
• Accommodation is available at a comfortable guesthouse in the heart of the forest, but due to the generator’s power outage, we will stay in a hotel 40 minutes’ drive away.

Accommodation – In Kumasi

• Visit the Kwabena Sam Forest, a semi-degraded rainforest with numerous open areas
• On day 8, we set off towards Kakum National Park, arriving in the evening to check into our hotel
• Relax while capturing the many beautiful butterfly photos we have taken.

Day 6 and 7 Accommodation- In Bonkro

Day 8 Accommodation- Near Kakum National Park

• Visit Kakum National Park, a vast forest area covering over 50,000 hectares
• The day is divided into two sections, with lunch and a rest before returning to the forest.
• The evening is spent looking at our photographs, enjoying a meal, and adding to our growing butterfly checklist.

Accommodation- Near Kakum National Park

• After breakfast, we head towards Ankasa National Park, where we stay at a basic guesthouse.
• The park offers a relaxed morning with minimal travel required.
• We spend the afternoon and two full days exploring Ankasa, observing various species of butterflies
• The camp team can either bring lunch to the field or provide rest and lunch in the afternoons.
• In the evenings, we admire the many moths and nature while relaxing over an evening meal and refreshmentsAccommodation- In Ankasa

• Visiting Ankasa Reserve and Kissi Forest Reserve offers a unique opportunity for butterfly watching and photography.
• The reserve is a drier type of forest allowing you to see special species composition, attracting commoner butterflies such as Mocker Swallowtail, Citrus Swallowtail, Common Forester, Giant African Skipper, and if you are lucky, you might get to see the smaller but similar Western Blue Policeman.
• The journey back to Accra allows for accommodation for the evening before visiting Aburi in the morning.

Accommodation- In Accra

• Visit Aburi Botanical Gardens, located in the Eastern Region of the Southern part of Ghana, with an area of 64.8 hectares
• After a wonderful morning we can return to Accra and freshen up prior to our early evening meal
• Due to most flights departing Ghana in the late evenings, a late check-out from the hotel is arranged, and the team will then transfer you to the airport for your departure.
